RISING FROM THE RUBBLE - REBUILDING HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE JAVA EARTHQUAKE

With members of the Operation USA field team based in Banda Aceh, we were able to respond promptly to this disaster seven hours away in Yogyakarta to carry out preliminary assessments of the damage and the needs of our partners. With more than 30,000 people injured, it was clear that providing emergency health care services was an urgent priority and Operation USA decided that this was an area where we could provide the most effective support and assistance.

PAKISTAN EARTHQUAKE UPDATE

Murshid Amputee Rehabilitation Center Update:
Bargh, Pakistan (June 15, 2006)

The Murshid Amputee Rehabilitation Center, which offers rehabilitation services to the over 1200 recent amputees in the region, is in the final stages of construction. The new Center will serve the deprived populations of the semi-rural areas of Sindh & Balochistan. In addition to the amputee rehabilitation center, Operation USA is also working with MURSHID to initiate a housing project in Bargh, before the onset of the upcoming winter.

OMEED Clinic Update:
Muzzafarabad, Pakistan (June 14, 2006)
The OMEED Clinic opened its doors on June 10, 2006. The first few days it saw 75 patients a day, some with primary care needs and some with spinal injuries. The clinic now sees between 100-150 patients a day and is currently training 2 physical therapists to serve the needs of disabled patients. The opening ceremony was attended by civil and religious officials, and was a welcome addition to the community, following the closure of several Cuban-run medical clinics. Operation USA is currently working with OMEED to assist them in meeting their immediate needs for antibiotics and medical equipment.

KATRINA RECOVERY UPDATE

Much of the burden of finding solutions to the problems presented by the evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina & Rita has fallen on the shoulders of the region’s not for profit clinics. This remarkable community of people and non-profit groups, all of whom also suffered from the wrath of the hurricanes, stepped in to fill the void left by the failure and indifference of so many institutions.

Our ongoing support is needed now more than ever. A recent Operation USA visit to the region made clear how absorbing these added burdens has stretched the already limited resources of the clinics and left them struggling to meet expanding needs.

One Man's Opinion: Richard Walden, President of Operation USA

The Philanthropic Actions of Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, etc.

With the recent news of Warren Buffett's $31 billion donation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we may see that serious change for the better in the lives of hundreds of millions of struggling people is in the offing.

With all the good that this donation can do, will philanthropic actions of such scope become too bureaucratic causing these new foundations to lose the ability to distinguish and indeed nurture the small, as yet unheralded efforts of many individuals and organizations which can move the planet?
