THE PAKISTAN AND INDIA EARTHQUAKE SIX MONTHS LATER -
AN ONGOING CRISIS
In the March E-Newsletter, we reported on Operation USA's grant to fund the building of a clinic just outside Muzaffarabad and on an amputee rehabilitation center in Bargh, Pakistan. Following is an interesting article published by The New England Journal of Medicine that discusses the ongoing needs, lessons learned by the emergency relief community and how you can help alleviate the most pressing health concerns.

MATERNITY CARE SAVES LIVES
ADDRESSING A VITAL NEED IN ACEH, INDONESIA
AFTER THE TSUNAMI
Location: Aceh, Indonesia
The broken tiles and foundations, now overgrown with shrubs and creeper vines, will soon be cleared away to make room for a new "polindes" (maternity health clinic) in Kuala Bakung. Operation USA has partnered with the French NGO, Committee D'Aide (CAM), to build a new facility that will finally restore essential antenatal, intra-natal and post-natal care services for pregnant women. In a country where 50% of women give birth without skilled attendants and where at least 70% have no postpartum care during the six weeks following delivery, the Kuala Bakung clinic and its staff will be providing a precious service.

Theresa Pavlov of St. Vincent De Paul Pharmacy in Biloxi, Mississippi meets with Operation USA on Pharmacy needs
|
A PERSONAL ACCOUNT:
POST-KATRINA IN BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI
Location: Biloxi, Mississippi
"Things here in Biloxi are exciting, frustrating, interesting, sad and joyful: a real rollercoaster of an emotional experience. Re-building in Biloxi and everywhere west is still very slow because definitive housing codes have not been adopted. Housing now is outrageously priced and rental property is very scarce. Affordable housing for our poor is non-existent. For those who live month to month and lived in rental property – a lot of our folks – remaining on the coast is very, very difficult." - excerpt from Theresa Pavlov's letter, Executive Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy in Biloxi, Mississippi, an all-volunteer pharmacy, to Operation USA
