Hope’s Beautiful Daughters

Awesome Girl

It is a rare thing in life to be able to say that you have met a hero, let alone thirty of them. But it is impossible not to be inspired by the young girls you meet at the Awesome Girls Mentoring program in New Orleans, Louisiana. Their young lives, already full of challenge and uncertainty, were made more complex by experiencing the trauma of Hurricanes Katrina and the terrible days of chaos that followed. Yet, when you meet them, you are struck not by the many hardships with which they contend, but by their smiles, their energy and by their laughter that rings down the center’s brightly painted corridors. In many ways they are lucky. These girls have found a home in this wonderful program that has for years successfully mentored at risk girls throughout the greater New Orleans area. This program, so necessary to the community before the storm, has proven to be an even more vital resource since it struck. Under the steady guidance of director James Rogers and his dedicated staff, the girls are given a place of safety and shelter where they are nurtured, both physically and emotionally, and where they are allowed the simple freedom to be children again. Nutritional programs, self esteem and confidence building classes, scholastic tutoring, counseling, and physical activities are just a few of the many services the program makes available to the girls and their families. Through these invaluable programs, the girls are given the tools that help them to better cope with the disquiet of their lives and the confidence to overcome it.  Most significantly, because of this program, these amazing and courageous girls are given a fighting chance at a brighter and happier future.

The Children Are Our Future

Willows' preschoolers discuss helping other children with OpUSA staff

The Willows Community School's pre-kindergarten class stopped by Operation USA to deliver items they collected to be donated to community clinics and other social service programs along with pictures they drew. They were excited to give back to the community as a way to reach out to the other children they are helping.
