OpUSA Shipments Aid Peru Earthquake Victims and Cambodian Mothers

Peru: On September 24, a forty-foot sea container with seven tons of medical supplies, in response to the recent devastating earthquake, left Los Angeles for coastal areas south of the capital city of  Lima, Peru, but more help is still needed. To find out how you can help, click here.

Cambodia: The tiny birthing room in the Cambodian clinic was bare save for the ancient exam table with rusty stirrups that had witnessed hundreds of births over the decades. Tired looking medical instruments that had not been replaced in more than 15 years littered a small side table. Return six months later and the picture is a different one. Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) encourages companies to voluntarily take further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large. It came into common practice in the 1970s, and, in recent years, it is exciting to see an expanded increase of large companies now filing a corporate social responsibility report along with their annual report.

Operation USA has partnered with Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the philanthropic arm of Honeywell International that specifically focuses on their CSR programs. Together, we have worked on programs in Pakistan, in disaster response after the Asian Tsunami and, of late, in improving rural education in India through the Honeywell Healthy Schools Initiative (HHSI). We are excited to be working with Honeywell and applaud their dedication to help improve the quality of life for others. To read about this program, please click here.

Dream Becomes Reality: Weragoda Computer Center

What began as an idea by Operation USA volunteer, Margaret Rajarethnem, and Reverend Serada in Singapore is now a fully-operating computer center in Weragoda, Sri Lanka. The center, completed in June of this year, was constructed in six months in an area accessible to several remote tsunami-affected villages. The center’s purpose and curriculum is intended to supplement existing gaps in the local education system and currently provides basic computer training to 100 students on a rotating schedule to maximize use of the available computers. Job placement resources will also be available to “graduates” of the program to ensure a sustainable livelihood for the participating youth as they become working adults.

To read more about Ms. Rajarethnem's dedication to those affected by the Asia Tsunami in her country of Sri Lanka, please click here.
