DEADLY CYCLONE
DEVASTATES MYANMAR
Cyclone Nargis traveled across the delta region of Myanmar late Friday night, May 2nd, with wind and extensive flooding, causing entire villages to disappear. The high winds downed power lines and ripped roofs off of buildings. The 10-hour storm battered the Irrawaddy Delta and Yangon with 120 mile an hour winds and 20 inches of rain, causing casualties in the tens of thousands, with thousands still missing. Several hundred thousand people are homeless and without food, water and/or power.
Although access to Myanmar is a major obstacle for US NGOs, Operation USA is responding to the devastation of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar with shelter, water purification and health care supplies after an assessment is completed by staff currently in the area.

It is impossible to pin blame on any one cause for this situation but, applying my own 29 years’ field experience, here’s what I believe is happening: To continue reading, please click here.
