Domestic and International Emergency Relief:
Long-Term Development

Tsunami Salon, created by micro-enterprise funding.
Livelihoods grants in Sri Lanka helped to rebuild income generating projects such as the "Tsunami Salon"

Years after a disaster has abated, communities are still frequently in need of assistance. Responding to a continuing need, Operation USA makes grants to partner organizations for sustainable community-based projects.

Effects of man-made and natural disasters are not limited by time. Extreme drought, pandemic disease and war severely and permanently alter infrastructure, livelihoods and development. When funds permit, Operation USA continues to fund community-based organizations that are implementing long-term development and lasting capacity building projects. Societies affected by disasters are often prone to political turmoil and have fewer resources to cope with such natural disasters. These projects promote building schools and clinics, irrigation canals and fresh water systems, income generating projects, civil society trainings, and increasing access to health care and education. Such activities help to support self-sufficiency and confirm our commitment to future generations.

A Holistic Approach to Rebuilding Communities:

Education, Health Services, Microfinance and Income Generating Activities…

El Salvador, periodically from 1981 to 2001: Over a twenty year period, Operation USA rebuilt homes, a school, provided psychosocial trauma counseling programs and worked to build the organizational capacity of our partner La Coordinadora.

Nicaragua, 1983 to present: Nicaragua is a unique Operation USA story…When Operation USA responded to Hurricane Mitch in November 1998, little did we realize that our work would intensify over the next six years. For an in-depth look at our work with the Santa Rosa community, please click here.

Cambodia, 1979 to present: Operation USA was the first humanitarian assistance organization to enter the country after the Khmer Rouge’s five year holocaust. After sending the first shipment of medical supplies and equipment, and educational supplies, and helping to build a medical and dental school, today we are supporting livelihood and basic infrastructure programs. For more information about our work in Cambodia, please click here.

Vietnam, 1979 to present: In 1979, Operation USA’s first relief airlift helped refugees fleeing from the War. Throughout the 1980s we provided clinics and hospitals with medical supplies as well as sustainable agricultural programs. Today, we continue to support microfinance programs, particularly those who have been put in danger by avian flu (bird flu). For more information about our work in Vietnam, please click here.

Healthcare Programs:

Cuba, 1996 to present: Operation USA’s overall humanitarian assistance program has been to provide Cuba's healthcare system with the materials and the knowledge it needs to realize its potential. For more information about our work in Cuba, please click here.

Ethiopia periodically from1983 to 2005: Evaluated and conducted a needs assessment of the rural healthcare system in Ogaden region.

Landmines and Technology Programs:

As a result of creating Operation Landmine, a program developed to advocate the transfer of advanced technologies from military and industrial use to humanitarian de-mining efforts, Operation USA was awarded the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for our work as part of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. For information on Operation Landmine, please click here.
Water Detection Programs: Operation USA’s role in water resource development goes beyond the pure advocacy of the application or transfer of advanced technology from purely military use to humanitarian efforts.  In water, we have a long history of well drilling, irrigation projects and water purification programs in post-disaster environments. For more information about our Water Detection Program, please click here.
Knowledge Exchanges: Human capital is as important to develop as sending materials or rebuilding infrastructure. Operation USA, uses “Knowledge Exchanges” as a key element of its development programs. To read about past exchanges, please click here.
