WHERE WE WORK:
Southern India

Two fishermen in Karaikal, Nagapattinam, India work on new fishing nets provided by Operation USA supporting the ability to assist the return to livelihoods after the Tsunami.

The peaceful coastal towns of South India, like much of the region, were ravaged on December 26, 2004. Unfortunately, the pledged government support did not reach many of the intended recipients. Operation USA is partnering with three locally-led organizations that are working to restore communities’ access to healthcare, livelihoods and education.

Partner: Vivekanand Medical Research Society
Project Title: Vivekanand Mobile Clinic, Emergency Support
Sector: Health
Location: Tamil Nadu
Activities: Operation USA partnered with Vivekanand Medical Society following the Gujurat Earthquake, providing a mobile clinic that is still in operation today. Immediately following the Tsunami, Vivekanand provided emergency medical treatment to affected individuals along the Tamil Nadu coast.

Project Title: SAWED Livelihoods/Housing Program
Sector: Livelihoods/Housing
Location: Karaikal, Nagapattinam
Activities: SAWED trust provided 92 families in Mandapattur and Kallikuppam villages with fishing nets, motors, and temporary housing, allowing them to return to their livelihoods and generate income for the village. SAWED also provided a health camp, where 420 people were screened.

Project Title: SAWED Educational Support Program
Sector: Education
Location: Kilinjalmedu, Karaikal
Activities: SAWED Trust is currently providing: educational aid packages (school supplies, books, uniforms) to 250 tsunami-affected students in three villages; eye care; and, the planting of trees to enhance the learning environment in five village schools. This program will continue over the next three months.

Project Title: Emergency Medicines

Location: Pondicherry
Activities: Treated hundreds of tsunami survivors

Partner: Auroville Community Environmental Clean-up
Project Title: Post-tsunami Coastal Rehabilitation
Sector: Environment
Location: Near Auroville District
Activities: Environmental clean-up supplies, supported teams of hundreds of volunteers; Rehabilitating coastal areas.
