On May 27, 2006, the ancient city of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java, was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of the morning. More than 5,800 people were killed and fewer than 400,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed leaving thousands sheltering in makeshift shelters and tents. OpUSA responded promptly to this disaster and in partnership with Australian Aid International, we are currently rebuilding two health clinics that were completely destroyed in the worst hit district of Bantul.
With each clinic once serving a combined population of more than 13,000, all that remains of the clinics today is broken bricks and rubble. Returning to the same location today, the first new facility stands proudly, slightly bigger and better than its predecessor. Rebuilding the health clinics has been made possible through the generosity of all our donors, including The Sac who have funded the reconstruction of the clinic in Desa Seloharjo, Bantul District.
