WHERE WE WORK:
Pakistan Earthquake, 2005

Two women share a blanket for warmth from the cold Pakistan winter.

On the morning of October 8, 2005, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Pakistan/Kashmir region, killing over 73,000 individuals and leaving over 3 million people injured and homeless in very harsh and difficult terrain. One hundred forty aftershocks caused further devastation to structures and properties in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. Following an airlift of essential life-saving emergency medical supplies worth $1.8 million, Operation USA partnered with three local organizations to rebuild permanent housing, a rehabilitation center, a health clinic and promotion of vocational training.

Operation USA Partners:

Partner: Murshid Amputee Rehabilitation Center
Project Title: CHAL Amputee Rehabilitation Center
Sector: Health, Capacity Building
Location: Bargh, Pakistan
Description: Operation USA worked with Murshid to build a rehabilitation center in Bargh, a remote mountain village heavily impacted. The center works in conjunction with the Peshawar Prothetics Institute in order to identify (through extensive surveys), diagnose, treat and rehabilitate amputee victims. The program has already conducted a needs assessment, with a return of 300 surveys identifiying the needs and location of amputees. The program also has an element of vocational training, which provides long-term support for amputees.

Partner: Murshid/CHAL
Project Title: Murshid Housing Program
Sector: Housing
Location: Bargh, Pakistan
Description: The primary objective of this program is to provide permanent housing (at roughly US$8,000/home) to homeless persons in earthquake affected areas. These homes have been designed in a manner that makes it possible for disabled individuals to regain independent movement with a wheelchair or other mobility aids.

Partner: OMEED Primary Health Clinic
Project Title:
Primary Health Care Clinic
Sector: Health, Livelihoods
Location: Muzaffarbad, Pakistan
Description: The construction of the 12-room primary healthcare clinic is complete! Two physicians and two nurses are seeing more than 100 patients per day. Operation USA is currently working with OMEED to obtain additional medical equipment.
