Every part of the small island of Sri Lanka felt the effects of the Tsunami. For an island with a total population of roughly 20.7 million, 30,957 were reported dead, 15,196 were injured, 5,644 were reported missing, 78,407 homes were destroyed, 396,170 people were displaced and 896 children are orphaned. The statistics are staggering, and are compounded by immeasurable psychological impacts. Project Title: Kalladi Village Program
Sector: Education, Housing, Development, Health
Location: Kalladi, Eachchilampattu
Activities: Operation USA committed to rebuilding an entire village destroyed by the Tsunami, providing 136 homes, a health center, community center, primary school and preschool as well as livelihood materials (60 boats, nets) to allow for self-sustainability within the village.

Project Title: Paiyagala Preschool Construction
Sector: Education, Nutrition
Location: Paiyagala
Activities: Operation USA, along with local volunteers, has rebuilt a preschool destroyed in the Tsunami, which has now opened its doors to 90 students. Operation USA is also funding an ongoing monthly nutrition and English-learning program. Partner: Sarvodaya
Project Title: Sarvodaya Women’s Empowerment Program
Sector: Psychosocial/Livelihoods
Location: Matara District – 10 villages
Activities: Sarvodaya provided women’s support groups, livelihood training and micro-finance (small vegetable gardens, sewing shops), as well as initiated a public health education program in villages in southern Sri Lanka. Partner: Project Galle ‘05
Project Title: Project Galle Livelihoods Program

Activities: Project Galle provided emergency supplies to tsunami-affected individuals in the south and provided cash grants to nearly 500 individuals to re-launch small businesses. |
