Hurricane Michael Recovery

October 11, 2018–Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm yesterday. With winds topping 155 mph, the storm is being reported as the strongest to hit the US mainland on record. Early reports from impacted areas along the Florida panhandle say damage is widespread and in many areas “catastrophic,” with entire coastal communities destroyed or cut off. Millions of homes and businesses are without power in the aftermath as search and rescue efforts for survivors continue.

Michael was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved across Georgia on Thursday.

Operation USA has worked in Florida after previous disasters, most recently after Hurricane Irma struck late last year. As we assess damage and examine opportunities to provide aid after Michael–by shipping in-kind materials and/or delivering cash grants–we will call on existing relationships in impacted areas in addition to forming new partnerships with community-based organizations.
